Our tamariki have been spending the last few months learning about all things Summer, including how to keep ourselves safe. To support them in gaining a deep and genuine understanding of Summer safety, we worked along the Cancer Society by following their Under Cover Cody program.
This entailed us looking into what procedures and routines we currently had around shade, hat wearing, understanding and our centre policy on Sun Protection.
Our children and staff were able to learn more about the types of hats that are suitable for our New Zealand sun, which enabled them to receive new bucket hats from the Cancer Society.
Exploring the differences in sunscreens and their SPF number gave the children an understanding around why we were sun screen and what to look for on the bottle.
This was a great opportunity for us to touch base with community programmes to share knowledge in a practical way.
